Project 821, a zero-diesel yacht that runs on clean, emission-free power derived from green hydrogen, was designed by RWD and is represented by Edmiston. This enables the luxury yacht to travel between ports and anchorages, while sustainably maintaining its hospitality load and facilities. Feadship’s R&D group has been investigating hydrogen and other alternatives to fossil fuels with the goal of realizing “net zero” yachts by the year 2030. Hydrogen fuel cells produce electricity without burning and only pure water is generated as a waste product. However, there were problems incorporating this technology into maritime uses, such as the absence of rules for hydrogen storage and fuel-cell systems. Feadship worked alongside industry associates to establish equipment, safety measures, and regulations to navigate these hindrances.
Creating a practical method for storing compressed liquid hydrogen on a luxury yacht posed as a significant hurdle. However, despite the challenges, hydrogen technology is a crucial element in shifting away from fossil fuels. Project 821’s fuel-cell technology also caters to methanol as an alternative liquid fuel, signifying a remarkable progress in the design of sustainable yachts.

The yacht is integrated with advanced systems for waste heat recovery and intelligent solutions for energy management to continue decreasing its carbon emissions.
