Feadship Introduces Revolutionary Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Yacht: Project 821

The cutting-edge Feadship yacht, Project 821, has reached a vital milestone after five years in development; it has been launched. This yacht is not only unique to the Dutch manufacturer, but it also leads the way in yachting by being the first private boat to employ a hydrogen fuel-cell system to generate electricity without emissions.

The initiation of Project 821 represents a momentous achievement in the sector, being the first hydrogen fuel-cell yacht to embark on its journey. The owner’s intent was unambiguous from the beginning: to construct the most environmentally friendly yacht possible without sacrificing speed or opulence. The yacht, which initially surpassed 328 feet in length overall (LOA), was built to travel from port to port and support hotel loads without releasing any pollutants.

Feadship’s ambition to attain “net zero” yachts by 2030 has prompted their investigation into different energy sources. Hydrogen fuel cells emerged as a prime candidate owing to their established use in cars and spacecraft. Although storing compressed liquid hydrogen at -253°C is challenging and needs considerably more room compared to diesel fuel, Feadship teamed up with Lloyd’s Register and PowerCell Group to effectively incorporate this technology into Project 821.

The last LOA of the yacht was almost 390 feet, this increase in size was due to the extra room required for hydrogen storage tanks, fuel cells, switchboard, and vent stacks. While it’s not capable of crossing the ocean using only hydrogen, Project 821 uses biofuel-powered MTU gensets for propulsion which significantly lowers emissions as opposed to conventional fossil fuels.

Project 821 also comes with a multitude of green features including a system for waste-heat recovery and a clever power-management system that modulates air conditioning and heating according to room occupancy. The yacht is replete with spacious areas for guests, offering eight primary deck cabins which can be transformed into four grand suites. The yacht is also packed with a host of amenities like a library, movie theatre, spa, beach lounge, and also a 27-foot-long counter-current pool with a see-through bottom.

The personal space of the proprietor is similar to a luxury rooftop apartment, positioned 121 feet over the water and comes with individual access to three private deck areas. The yacht’s inner design is carried out by RWD and carries a coastal theme, incorporating materials such as leather, rattan, oak, eucalyptus, marble, and various textured fabrics.

Project 821 is notable not only for its environmental progress but also as the biggest motoryacht ever unveiled in The Netherlands. The Feadship yacht, with its advanced power supply system and plush lodging for a maximum of 32 guests, redefines the concept of sustainable luxury on the ocean.
